Are Reviews Important for Self-Published Children’s Book Authors?
Absolutely! When you buy something on Amazon, don't you look at all of the reviews before you make a decision? Readers do the same thing. They want to see what people are saying about your book. They want to know if the book is genuinely good. Getting quality reviews is just as important as getting a lot of reviews. Sometimes all it takes is one quality review to make something click in someone's head and say "this is the perfect book for me." Being a self-published author can make this even harder. You won't have the marketing of a big publishing company backing you. So, you will need to do your best to acquire book reviews to show people why they should buy your book.
Are Children’s Book Reviews Worth It?
Getting a book review will not guarantee that people will buy your book, but it may help make a favorable impression. I have actually recommended books to others even though I didn't read the book. I might tell someone, "I just saw this cute book about magicians, maybe so and so would like that since they love magic. I saw that it had good reviews." For a lot of self-published children's book authors, reviews are their lifeline. I've worked with authors who utilize free book sale campaigns and paid marketing to increase their reviews. They say, by having these quality reviews, I have increased my sales and am finally getting some regular income each month. So, book reviews are definitely worth it. Would you buy something online without reading reviews first?
How Much Do Self-published Children's Authors Make?
If you look at a single book only (some authors have multiple children's books), and take into account the average author's best campaign, they can make around $3000 in lifetime sales. This may seem great to some or extremely low. The fact is that the amount of children's books being published every year is in the hundreds of thousands. With the rise of self publishing on KDP and other websites, anyone can be a children's book author. That's what makes getting quality book reviews and exposure for your book that much more important. If you want to make more money selling your self-published children’s book, it's really up to you and how much work you want to put into it.
Why Are Children’s Book Reviews Important?
Book reviews are important because they act as a reflection and interaction for the author to truly get a sense of how the community is reacting and embracing their work. I have seen authors who get reviews of their book before mass publishing in order to get feedback and make changes to their book. This is a great way to utilize reviews to make your book that much better to increase sales. You can also use reviews and publish them right on the cover of your book. If you are lucky enough to have your book on bookshelves, someone could pick it up and read a review of it right there without having to look it up online.
How Do I Get My Children's Book Reviewed?
You can reach out to us at our email [email protected] to ask about being reviewed and published on our blog. Another great way to get reviewed is by entering into a children's book award contest. They have different categories for every kind of children's book. When you submit, they create a page on their site for your book for others to see. They will also review your book there. There's much more information you can learn about on our children’s book award contest page.
How To Sell More Children’s Books
Whether you want to sell more books online via Amazon KDP or another outlet, one of the best ways to get recognized is with quality reviews. It’s a fact that the majority of people buying anything online won’t do so unless there are good reviews. The same goes for children’s books. If I see a book with 2 reviews vs. a book with 784, I am more likely to trust the 784 people. Another thing people don’t realize is that Amazon actually displays books more often when they have a lot of good reviews. Ever notice how when you view products on Amazon, the recommended products have lots of reviews? The same goes for books. Amazon has an algorithm that makes it so they push the best reviewed books to you to buy because it’s more likely that someone will purchase those books. So you’re more likely to sell your children’s books if you have more reviews. How do you do that? You can pay for reviews, you can give out copies for people to review, you can offer free book deals on KDP and ask people to review it. Make sure there is a link in your ebook that asks people to please leave a review on Amazon. It definitely increases your chances of receiving a review.
*Avoid having family and friends review your book on Amazon. Amazon can track where reviews are coming from and even if you have a sibling pay for your book, and leave a fake review, they can penalize you. This HAS happened.
