The Presidents Did What? - by Wag Harrison
Step right up for a spooky tour of the White House! A long-dead but still charismatic Millard Fillmore will serve as your ghostly guide as you make your way through the Executive Mansion. Learn about the history of each room you visit from ghosts of presidents past—arguably the worst presidents in US history. Discover how they ended up there, cursed for all eternity to haunt the rooms of the White House, and find out why it’s so important for us to learn from their mistakes.
I’ll be honest, I was a little surprised how much I liked this book. Starting with the cover, I loved everything about it. The colors and the way the presidents are drawn gives it such a cool feeling. My son loved the cover and kept looking at it. Right from the start it begins with a great quote by Millard Fillmore. You begin the story with Millard Fillmore welcoming you into the white house and talking about how it is now haunted by several ex-presidents as a result of their failings. His personality is just great and you feel like you're on a real tour. My son and I loved how everyone was cool looking ghosts. You will get to meet Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover, Grover Cleveland, Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan, Martin Van Buren, and Chester A. Arthur. They will touch on important topics in history like slavery, immigration, racism, civil war, and the Trail of Tears. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think it should be in every classroom. It teaches kids about the bad side of history in a nice way. It is not politically charged at all. It's just a great lesson in history. I’d even like to see this turned into a short movie of some kind. Great for upper elementary kids.
