The Adventures of Rhonda Raccoon
by Ellie Leas
The Adventures of Rhonda Raccoon is about Rhonda, a raccoon who wants to learn everything she can about the world. Everywhere she goes she makes new friends and loves to explore the forest with Nathan the fawn, Speedy the squirrel, and Vanessa and Melanie the bear cubs. The story begins with Rhonda and her family meeting an Oak tree that wants her family to live inside of it. She has lots of fun with her friends in the forest but always wishes someday that she would visit the city. When she finally decides to go visit, she meets another raccoon named Flip who was popping his head out of a tunnel. Flip and his family invite Rhonda to eat with them for dinner and Rhonda is so excited to eat out of a can. They rummage through the restaurant dumpster for food. Flip tells Rhonda all about living in a pipe most of his life. Rhonda tells them all about how great it is living in the forest. Eventually, Rhonda heads back home and the whole family goes to sleep for the winter. In spring, The family awakens to find that Old Oak has broken a huge branch and needs help. That's when Rhonda gets miracle help from fairies and unicorns. This book was longer than the typical books I review but my son really enjoyed it. It took him a few bedtimes to finish reading it to me. It's a great story filled with lots of really cool characters. My son's favorite part was the raccoons going through the garbage to eat and my daughter seeing the unicorns because she loves them so much. There is a hardcover copy in the works if you prefer hardcover to paperback.
