Playing It Safe With Mr. See-More Safety: Let's Rap and Rhyme
by Janis Rafael, Jennifer Walsh (Illustrator) Let's Rap and Rhyme is the first book of a series dedicated to teaching children how to be “safety conscious” as they leave their parents’ protective arms and begin taking the first steps to independence. The poetic style offers children a way to remember important concepts through the use of repetition and rhyme. As children listen to the poems, they will begin to refer to them in their everyday lives. These rhymes are filled with vital information which parents often assume children know, but in reality, may not. By receiving valuable safety instruction at an early age children will have a chance to develop good habits that will help them throughout their lives. I can totally picture this book in classrooms. There is so much good safety information to teach kids and it's done in a fun way using rap. The illustrations are fun and engaging. The character of Mr See-More Safety reminds me of something from School House Rock when I was a kid. Kids can be taught valuable lessons like don’t talk to strangers, be careful when getting a ball from the street, be careful around other people's dogs, look before crossing the street, don’t climb furniture, and many many more.
