Ollie the Ostrich: In The Great Race
by Jitesh Hothi Join Ollie the Ostrich on his journey to prove that being different from others is what makes us unique. A perfect bedtime story to share. This is a wonderful story about embracing your differences because they make you who you are. Ollie is an Ostrich who is big, round and fluffy and loves to laugh and play. But one day in school, his classmates tell him he is not cool because he can't fly like the other birds. Ollie is now sad and feeling like he doesn’t want to go back to school. With the help of his mother, she tells him that he is special and his differences make him who he is. The next day, Ollie challenges the other birds to a foot race. Thinking this was nothing, the birds all agree. In the end the birds see that Ollie’s differences make him the fastest bird. I loved the final page and the overall message of the book, “Although our differences may set us apart, words can often hurt our hearts. Loving ourselves and each other can help us create a better world for one another.” I always enjoy books with messages like this to help teach my son about inclusion and how you should treat everyone the same no matter how different they are.
