Hunka Chunka Monkey Shapes Up
By Sam E. Bromley Hunka Chunka Monkey is a happy, yet inactive monkey who loves his sugary snacks. He misses out on so much fun until he meets his new friend Runka Dunka Donkey, who teaches Hunka how to have a healthy lifestyle. Winsome illustrations enhance the story's message of friendship and activity in a fun and playful way. Hunka Chunka Monkey Shapes Up teaches kids an important lesson about healthy eating and exercise without being heavy-handed. Kids will see, through Hunka Chunka Monkey's eyes, that it's easy to be “fit and trim,” because, as Runka Dunka Donkey tells his new friend, he only has to cut back—not give up—his favorite snack. This story sure had my kids and I craving some ice cream. Dipped chocolate chip cookies in fudge, then covered with chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. As we go through the story, Hunka Chunka Monkey realizes that he misses out on fun activities because he is too out of shape from all the snacks he eats. He says he doesn’t mind missing out because he loves his cookies, fudge, and ice cream. Eventually Hunka agrees to play basketball with Runka Dunka. Each day Hunka practices a little bit. He climbs up and down the tree and soon realizes that he has more energy and can now swing from the branches. Runka even tells Hunka that he hasn’t been having his sugary snacks like he used to. Hunka learns that by just staying active and cutting back on his favorite snacks, he can have a healthy active lifestyle and eat what he wants. I think this book did a fantastic job of easily explaining this. Everyone loves to eat bad food. All we have to do is not eat tons of it and stay active.
