Emmy and Stella and the Egg Interview: Tales from the Coop and Stable Gazette
by Claire Woodbury The story starts off on a farm with an 8 year old girl named Emmy. She tells us she is the host of the Farm Talk Show. She is also the editor, printer, and producer of the Coop and Stable Gazette. She speaks throughout the book as if she is talking directly to you like you are standing right there with her. She goes on to talk more about herself and how she likes to sunbathe with the pig and drink tea with the chickens. She points out the horses Fred and Ned and Splogy, the Cow. She walks by the chicken coop and sees the 3 chickens knitting. She speaks to them and they say hi to each other. This is the point where Emmy starts teaching us all about chickens. She teaches us about roosting poles, nesting boxes, and chicken waterers. Then she realizes it's time for the interview with Stella. She races off to the playhouse. Once she and Stella are inside she turns on her recording device so that she can write her article later and make sure she has everything recorded. We get to learn about Stella’s amazing 21 day experience of being a broody chicken (laying on another chicken's eggs to hatch them). The 21 days were tough. Stella had to mainly sit there the whole time. Only taking breaks for some quick food and water. It wasn’t all bad since Stella’s sister brought her lemonade. Another friend brought her all the news. Stella describes how she would get lonely and also anxious if anyone came too close to her while sitting on the eggs. Then finally we get to learn about the eggs hatching and a special horn on the chick's beaks to help them escape. The book ends with a cute reunion of the chicks and Stella. I loved the style this book was written in. I like how Emmy spoke directly to me and my kids. It was a fun learning experience and my kids enjoyed learning all about chickens. Of course now they want to get a chicken coop in the backyard. I really liked the illustrations. They remind me of how illustrations used to be when I was a kid.
