The Things Friendship Brings
by Jamie Hitt
Tweet. Quack. Baa. Moo. Croak.

How can Thomas the Toad make friends when the animals he meets don't speak the same language?

Thomas must learn to embrace the differences of the others around him and find new ways to say the things friendship brings.

This is a story about a little toad who goes on a journey meeting new friends. The only problem is he doesn’t understand their language since they are different animals. He thinks the words he hears are beautiful, like the tweet-tweet of the bird. He just can’t understand what it means. He continues on his way and meets a group of ducks to hear quack-quack! Then he meets a sheep and a cow. He returns to his family and tells them all about these new words he has heard and “wished he could learn, so that he could return to have fun and to play, once he knew what to say.” His mother responds by telling him that it's hard to communicate when you don’t speak the same way. But there is still a way to play even though you don’t speak the same. Friendship isn’t just about being able to speak the same, it's about lending a hand.

The rhyming is very well done. My son loved reading the book to me. He loves rhyming books as it makes it easier for him. Kids will like making all the animal noises too. The overall message is what makes this book great. Everyone is different and we may not speak the same language, but we can all still be friends.

This book just happened to be perfectly timed for my son and I. We were at the playground yesterday and a boy was motioning that he wanted my son to play with him. We found out that he doesn’t speak english but that didn’t stop the 2 from playing with each other. Just by using hand motions or looking like they wanted to be chased, they were able to play together.
