Magic Word - by Erica Asare
This book is about a girl called Sophie, who is very impatient. In the story, as Sophie goes into a flower shop with her mum, she sees a plant pot which she really wants and requests that her mum buy it. Sophies’ mum does not buy the plant pot, because she wants to teach her how to have patience while she waits for Sophie to say the magic word “PLEASE!”. Sophie has no choice but to wait and say “please” if she really wants the pot plant. Sophie eventually gets what she has asked for and is happy when her pot plant starts growing after waiting patiently. Sophie realises that crying and shouting, “I want it now!” did not get her what she wanted, but a politer approach does the magic! I love how simple and to the point this book is. It quickly teaches your child the polite way to speak. This book was perfect for my son who does not always say please. Half the time he just yells out, “give me this or that”. Then I just wait and eventually he calmly says, “Please, can you give me this.” The illustrations are very well done and the story is a great lesson for children.
