This is 'Book One' in a series of seven books. Born a barn-baby, abandoned and shunned by the other cats for being different, Grooty Fledermaus is a lonely little kitten who has a heart as big as his name but who most certainly won't survive the upcoming winter without help. But when Katie, a young girl who is trying to cope with being ill and who has needs of her own, finds him and rescues him, she has no idea of the most wonderful and secret gift Grooty is about to give her in return!

The book begins with Katie who can’t play with the other children. It didn’t say but it seems like childhood cancer. Her mother takes her to her grandparents farm where they take her to see kittens in the barn. There she finds a hairless cat who might not survive the winter. So, she decides to take him home and name him Grooty Fledermaus. The book is written in a great rhyming scheme that makes it very easy to read. I thought this was a great book to open up discussions with my 6 year old about childhood illnesses like cancer. I liked how it was subtle that the illness was not really mentioned, but implied. I love how we got to see Katie take off her head wrap and show her happy self with the bald cat and just see them both bald and happy together. It showed a great friendship and bond between the two. I don’t see many books with kids with cancer. This is a great one and I hope to see more just like it. I can’t wait to see the other 6 books in the series.
