A Book About Empathy

This is the story of Maddie and her journey of learning empathy. In the book your child will learn what empathy is and why empathy is important. Maddie’s preschool teacher is teaching the class about empathy. She describes the metaphor, putting yourself in someone else's shoes. They share a story to help teach empathy. The example is about an old man in a store who walks very slowly. He’s holding a very heavy bottle of orange juice and drops it and it shatters. The teacher asks, how would you feel if you dropped the bottle of juice? Maddie says, “angry”. The teacher goes on to teach about helping the old man and how you can help him by simply asking him if there is anything you can do to help. The example is followed by discussion questions to help the reader understand the steps taken for empathy. There is another empathy story that shows how you can empathize with someone for a happy reason and you can share in that happy feeling. At the end of the book there is a guide to practicing empathy.

I absolutely love what this book is teaching children. I don’t think parents talk enough about empathy. It's so important for children to learn to understand how others feel. In today’s world it's all about “me”. This book is a wonderful way to teach empathy and create caring little people.
