Checkout her website When did you become a children’s book author?
December 2023. This is my very 1st children's book. Do you have a writing background? Yes, I've been a professional TV Writer for 13+ years. I've worked for major networks CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC, and the Weather Channel. How did you come up with the story? My son's pediatrician spoke with me about how sign language was a great way to communicate with young children, before they develop most of their language skills. This gave me the idea to write a book that was both fun and educational, and also focused on sign language. How did you come up with the character? The character is loosely based on my son 'Champion.' My son, however, is not hard-of-hearing. Did you hire an illustrator or do the illustrations yourself? I hired a group of illustrators. Are you self-published or published through a publishing company? I published it through the Amazon Kindle Network. From the day you came up with the idea for the story until you were holding your published book in your hand, how long did it take you to complete this book? It took me 3 months to complete the book. Although that feels relatively fast, I'm a part of the generation that appreciates instant gratification. So, that time period is what I expected. What made you want to publish a children's book? I'm a new mother and was inspired to write something my son will be able to read soon. What is one thing you wish you knew before beginning your book publishing journey? I wish I developed a more concrete plan for advertising. I now know what to expect, though, so I feel I am more equipped for whenever my next book is published. Any tips for future children’s book authors? Write something that is timeless and can be read for years to come. What is the best reaction from a reader, so far? Someone told me how much they related to the main character. They were excited to see themselves in a children's story, and that made me feel like it was all worth it. What's your writing process like? I wrote whenever I could in between changing diapers, feeding bottles, and chasing my crawling son around the house. Do you have any other books in the works? Yes, I currently have a children's book about space and the Solar System. You will see 'Champion' again with some new friends. Stay tuned for that. What does literary success look like to you? The benchmark for me is one day becoming a New York Times Best Seller. Do you read all of the book reviews you receive? Of course. This is not only beneficial, but it also warms my heart when readers enjoy the book. What was the hardest thing about getting your book published? Nothing was too hard. The biggest inconvenience is probably the cost (Paying illustrators, editors, etc.) What is your favorite children's book(s) of all time? The Ramona Quimby series was great. The character was both unconventional and extraordinary.
