Where Do Pirates Poop?
by Allie Compeau Let’s be honest, if you have a child in your life, there’s a pretty good chance that anything involving the word “poop” is going to get their attention. Where Do Pirates Poop? by Allie Compeau takes that fact and runs with it, turning a very silly question into a playful little pirate adventure. The book starts with exactly what the title promises: where, exactly, do pirates poop? From there, readers are taken through one ridiculous possibility after another. Do pirates use their hats? Treasure chests? Cannons? Barrels? The captain’s boots? Every suggestion gets a quick and funny “No!” along with a reason why it simply wouldn't work. The idea of poop falling from the crow’s nest, for example, is enough to make the whole situation feel even more absurd. What makes the book especially fun is the little jokes tucked into the answers. The pirates' barrels are apparently needed for pickles, the captain isn't going to be happy about his boots being used as a bathroom, and even the parrot gets dragged into the discussion. There are also a few bits of wordplay that adults will appreciate, including the explanation of the “poop deck.” The book manages to sneak in a little bit of history without making the lesson feel like a lesson. Eventually, the mystery is solved. Pirates used the ship's “head,” which was the name for the ship's toilet. Of course, just when you think you've reached the end of the joke, the book leaves readers with one final question: How do pirates wipe? And that's really the charm of Where Do Pirates Poop?. It knows exactly what kind of humor it is going for and doesn't try to be anything more complicated than a fun, silly read. The repeated questions and answers make it easy for younger children to follow along, and I can easily imagine kids joining in with the “No!” responses as the story progresses. Parents may find themselves rolling their eyes at some of the potty humor, but that's probably part of the fun. This is the sort of book that seems designed to get a giggle, especially from kids who think poop jokes are the height of comedy. And really, sometimes a children's book doesn't need to teach a huge life lesson or deliver an elaborate story. Sometimes it just needs to make a child laugh. Where Do Pirates Poop? is a quick, goofy read with plenty of pirate silliness, wordplay, and potty humor. If your young reader enjoys pirates and finds anything involving poop hilarious, this one should be right up their alley. Purchase the book on Amazon
