The Island of Yaki Yim Bamboo
By Millicent F. Arrindell and Fred Rohan-Vargas, illustrated by QBN Studios The Island of Yaki Yim Bamboo is an enchanting tale set in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Noah and Ida, curious children, hear about the magical island of Yaki Yim Bamboo from their grandmother, Enez, and her sister, Za. This island is a paradise where children can swim like dolphins, climb waterfalls, and transform into animals. However, the island's tranquility is disrupted by Bobotwee, a boy who overstays and loses the magic, becoming the Grand Master who bans children from the island. When a boatload of children arrives, Bobotwee tries to catch them, but they cleverly disguise themselves as animals. Mongoose and Iguana, the island's animal residents, devise plans to outsmart Bobotwee, ultimately convincing him to leave by disguising Mongoose as a mythical Juju. Bobotwee, fearing adulthood and the loss of childhood joys, is reluctant to leave but learns that growing up is part of life. A hurricane strikes, and Bobotwee saves the children, earning their gratitude. He decides to return home, realizing that his new life will bring joy and adventure. The story ends with Enez affectionately wrapping up the tale for her grandchildren. The Island of Yaki Yim Bamboo is a delightful and imaginative story that beautifully blends Caribbean folklore with themes of adventure, growth, and the magic of childhood. The narrative is engaging, with vibrant characters and a plot that keeps young readers captivated. The dialogue, rich with Caribbean dialect, adds authenticity and charm, immersing readers in the culture and setting of the Virgin Islands. The illustrations by QBN Studios are colorful and dynamic, bringing the magical island and its inhabitants to life. The playful interactions between the children and the island's animals are heartwarming and humorous, making the story enjoyable for both children and adults. The story also carries an important message about the inevitability of growing up and the continuous journey of learning and discovery. Bobotwee's transformation from a reluctant adult to a caring protector of children highlights the value of embracing change and finding joy in new stages of life. Overall, The Island of Yaki Yim Bamboo is a captivating read that combines adventure, fantasy, and valuable life lessons, making it a wonderful addition to any child's bookshelf.
