Dina Varvi balances humor and heart exceptionally well. Young readers will be entertained by the nacho-fueled mayhem, but they'll also come away with meaningful messages about friendship, courage, and taking responsibility for mistakes. Rather than feeling preachy, the lessons emerge naturally through the characters' actions and emotions.
 
Another aspect that adds depth to the story is Scruff-Nut's relationship with his beloved Yaya. While the book is filled with humor and mischief, some of its most heartfelt moments come from Scruff-Nut's fear of disappointing the grandmother who loves and cares for him. This connection offers a subtle glimpse into his immigrant family background and helps explain why the consequences of his actions weigh so heavily on him, adding an extra layer of warmth and authenticity to the story. 
 
The Great Nacho Blackout is a charming and funny children's story filled with memorable characters, laugh-out-loud moments, and a surprisingly touching message.
