Queen of the Mountain
By TAK Erzinger Queen of the Mountain is a heartwarming tale about a young girl named Vicky, who lives with her father in a small mountain village. Vicky's world is steeped in the beauty of nature, where she and her father live in harmony with the mountains, lakes, and streams. Their peaceful life is disrupted when a strange group arrives in their village, centering around a short and sad woman who introduces herself as the Countess of Kent. Despite her importance, Vicky quickly notices her sadness and decides to cheer her up by gifting her a bouquet of flowers from her late mother’s garden. Curiosity and compassion draw Vicky closer to the countess, and she secretly watches the countess sketching the landscapes Vicky loves. One day, the countess catches Vicky looking at one of her paintings and warmly thanks her for the flowers. This interaction opens up a bond between the two, where they share their mutual grief—Vicky for her mother and the countess for a man named Albert, whom she loved dearly. As their friendship grows, the countess eventually reveals her true identity: she is not a countess but Queen Victoria of England. Vicky, initially feeling unworthy of the Queen's friendship due to her humble origins, runs away in distress. However, with her father’s reassurance, Vicky learns that friendships can bridge differences in status and background. The story concludes with the Queen spending her last day with Vicky, offering her a special gift of a locket with rose petals as a reminder of their time together. Vicky, in return, gives the Queen something even more valuable—happiness and friendship. Queen of the Mountain is a charming and emotionally resonant story that beautifully captures the essence of friendship, compassion, and mutual understanding across differences. Erzinger weaves a tale that balances the innocence and curiosity of childhood with the poignant reality of loss and grief. The bond between Vicky and Queen Victoria feels authentic and touching, as both characters find solace in each other despite their vastly different worlds. One of the most compelling aspects of the story is its depiction of the natural world. Erzinger paints vivid scenes of mountains, lakes, and peaceful landscapes that mirror the characters’ emotional journeys. The mountains become a metaphor for Vicky’s simple but rich life and serve as a backdrop for her deep connection with nature and with her late mother. The relationship between Vicky and Queen Victoria serves as the emotional core of the book. Erzinger skillfully builds their friendship through small acts of kindness, shared sadness, and mutual understanding. Vicky’s innocence and boldness stand in stark contrast to the Queen’s grief and formality, yet they complement each other in a way that feels organic and real. Themes of grief, healing, and acceptance are delicately handled throughout the narrative. Both Vicky and the Queen are processing the loss of loved ones, and their shared experiences help them to heal. The simplicity of Vicky’s bouquet and the Queen’s painting of it symbolize the small, heartfelt gestures that can bring comfort in times of sorrow. The story also gently addresses the concept of class and status, showing how true friendship can transcend social barriers. Vicky’s initial feelings of inadequacy upon learning Queen Victoria’s identity highlight the disparities between them, but the resolution—that they are equals in their emotional connection—delivers a powerful message about human relationships. Overall, Queen of the Mountain is a beautifully written, tender story that speaks to readers of all ages. Its themes of grief, friendship, and the healing power of nature are universal, and the story offers both comfort and inspiration. Erzinger’s gentle prose and vivid imagery make this book a memorable read that leaves a lasting impact. See inside the book on Instagram
