Grandma Nellie's Gift of Peace
by Shonna Jeffreys Grandma Nellie’s Gift of Peace by Shonna Jeffreys is a sweet, gentle story about a little girl named Serenity who is learning what it really means to find peace when life feels a little overwhelming. I especially liked the way the author takes something that can be difficult for children to understand and turns it into something they can actually see and participate in. Serenity asks her grandmother how she manages to stay peaceful when things get tough. Grandma Nellie explains that peace doesn’t simply appear all at once. Instead, it is built “piece by piece,” using a special puzzle as a way to teach Serenity an important lesson. Throughout the week, Serenity and Grandma Nellie add a new piece to their puzzle. Kindness, love, strength, and helping each represent a way Serenity can bring more peace into her own life and the lives of those around her. What I enjoyed about this part of the story is that Serenity isn't just being told what these qualities mean. She gets to put them into practice. She helps a friend clean up spilled milk, shows love by giving her parents a big hug, works hard to learn how to tie her shoes, and helps Grandma Nellie prepare get-well boxes for children in the hospital. By the time the puzzle is complete, Serenity begins to understand what her grandmother has been trying to teach her all along. Peace isn't necessarily something we wait around for. It can come from the choices we make, the way we treat other people, and even the way we handle challenges ourselves. I thought the puzzle was a particularly nice way to present the message. Children can easily understand the idea of putting pieces together, and it gives the story a simple visual reminder that small acts can build into something bigger. I also liked that strength is shown through something as ordinary as learning to tie your shoes. It reinforces the idea that being strong doesn't always mean doing something huge. Sometimes it means being patient, continuing to try, and not giving up when something is difficult. Grandma Nellie is also a lovely presence in the story. Her warmth and gentle guidance make her feel like the kind of grandmother children can turn to when they need reassurance. The relationship between her and Serenity gives the book its heart. Grandma Nellie’s Gift of Peace is a simple story with a positive message about kindness, love, perseverance, helping others, and finding peace in everyday actions. It would make a nice read-aloud for parents, grandparents, teachers, or anyone looking for a story that gives children something encouraging to think about after the last page. Sometimes the biggest lessons don't need to be complicated. In Serenity's case, they come one little puzzle piece at a time. Purchase the book on Amazon
