Get That Grumpy Off Your Back!
by Kasie Kennedy (Author), Kadysha (Illustrator)

Some mornings just start off grumpy, and that is exactly what happens to Mac in Get That Grumpy Off Your Back! One morning on the way to school, Mac is clearly not himself. His friend Lilly notices right away that something is bothering him, and she comes up with a funny explanation: Mac has a “Grumpy” tagging along with him.

I really liked the idea of turning a bad mood into something kids can actually picture. Lilly explains that Grumpies like to sneak on when we're feeling down, whispering grumpy thoughts and doing their best to spoil the day. Mac can't actually see the Grumpy, but once Lilly points it out, he's willing to give her unusual advice a try.

And unusual is definitely the right word. Lilly suggests fighting the Grumpy with happy thoughts, a song, a joke, or even a silly dance. Before long, Mac is flapping his arms around like a bird and then hopping around like a toad with Lilly. What starts as a pretty miserable walk to school turns into the kind of goofy fun that makes it hard for Mac to stay grumpy.

What I enjoyed most about this story is how simple its message is without making it feel like a lecture. Everyone, especially children, has days when they wake up in a bad mood or just can't seem to shake an unhappy feeling. Giving that feeling a name and turning it into a funny little creature makes the idea much easier for young children to understand. Instead of telling Mac to “just be happy,” Lilly gives him something he can actually do.

The friendship between Lilly and Mac is another part that stood out to me. Lilly doesn't make fun of Mac for being grumpy or tell him to get over it. She notices that something is wrong and tries to help. By the end, Mac is smiling again and thanks her for being there. Her simple response, that he would do the same for her, is a sweet reminder of what good friendship looks like.

Kadysha's illustrations add to the playful feel of the story, especially as Mac gets more involved in Lilly's silly ideas. I can easily see children enjoying the bird-flapping and toad-hopping moments, and they also give parents and kids something fun to act out together while reading.

Get That Grumpy Off Your Back! is a short, cheerful story with a message that is easy for children to understand. It encourages kids to recognize when they're having a grumpy moment and reminds them that sometimes a little laughter, movement, silliness, or help from a friend can change the whole mood. It's a cute book for a read-aloud, and I especially like that it gives children a playful way to talk about those days when their own “Grumpy” decides to tag along.
