Bella Brown’s Messier Than Messy Room
by J.W. Zarek Illustrated by Anastasiia at GetYourBookIllustrations Bella Brown’s Messier Than Messy Room is a cute and relatable little story about a girl who would much rather draw than clean her room. I think a lot of kids are going to understand Bella’s feelings right away. Bella’s room is, well, messier than messy. She has a mountain of clothes, a tower of games, and stuffed animals everywhere. When her mom tells her she needs to clean before they can go to the new butterfly garden, Bella isn’t exactly thrilled. She’d much rather be drawing because, as she puts it, “Drawing is fun and easy, but cleaning my room is hard.” Luckily, Grandma Yetta is there to help. She talks Bella through the cleaning one thing at a time, starting with the clothes, then the stuffed animals, the games, and finally making the bed. I really liked this part because Grandma doesn’t make cleaning seem like some huge, overwhelming job. She breaks it down into smaller things, and before Bella knows it, she’s finished. There’s a nice little lesson here about how sometimes a big job feels a lot easier when you take it one step at a time. Bella even ends up realizing that cleaning can be fun, especially when she has someone encouraging her along the way. I also liked the ending. Bella gets to go to the butterfly garden, but before she leaves, she grabs her sketchpad and pencils because now that her room is clean, she can actually find her art supplies. And then she does something especially sweet by drawing a butterfly for Grandma Yetta and mailing it to her as a thank-you. The story is simple, cheerful, and easy for young children to follow. The illustrations by Anastasiia add to the fun and help bring Bella’s very messy room and her adventure to life. I think this would be a nice book for parents, grandparents, or teachers who want to gently introduce younger kids to the idea of cleaning up without making it feel like a chore they should dread. Bella Brown’s Messier Than Messy Room is a sweet story with a simple message: sometimes the best way to tackle a messy room, or any big job, is just to start with one thing.
