And Theo Sleeps Too
by Leah Reyes And Theo Sleeps Too is a gentle little bedtime story about Theo, who isn't quite ready to sleep. Instead of simply closing his eyes, Theo gets out of bed to investigate the sounds he hears around the house. What he discovers makes for a sweet and slightly whimsical nighttime adventure. As Theo explores, he comes across a crab quietly moving beneath the couch, a mouse enjoying a late-night snack in the kitchen, an owl watching him with its big round eyes, and a bat hanging upside down by the back door. Each animal has its own little moment before settling down for the night. By the time Theo makes his way back to bed, the house has become completely quiet, and Theo finally settles in and sleeps too. What I liked about this book is how simple it is without feeling empty. There isn't a big problem to solve or an elaborate adventure. Theo is simply curious about the noises around him, and that curiosity gives young readers a reason to follow him from room to room. The repeated phrases about each animal being "still," "quiet," and asleep also give the story a calm rhythm that fits nicely with a bedtime book. I especially liked the way the animals are introduced. The little sounds and movements give children something to guess about before Theo discovers what is making the noise. The crab snapping its claws, the mouse nibbling cheese, the owl giving a soft "Hoo," and the bat gently swaying all add small details that make the nighttime setting feel alive without making it scary. The ending is probably my favorite part. After all that exploring, Theo returns to his bed and listens again. This time, the house is quiet. The animals are asleep, and so is Theo. It brings the story back around in a simple way that feels satisfying and appropriate for bedtime. And Theo Sleeps Too is a quiet, reassuring story for young children who may be curious about all those little sounds they hear after the lights go out. It has a nice repetitive quality that would work well as a read-aloud, especially for children who enjoy spotting animals and joining in with familiar phrases. It's a small story, but that's part of its charm. There is something comforting about ending the night with the whole house finally settling down to sleep. Buy the book on Amazon
