A Baseball Scare is a short, fun story about two best friends, Tom and the narrator, who find themselves in a bit of a spooky situation while playing baseball. When Tom hits the ball into an old, run-down house, the boys decide they have to go inside to get it. What starts as a simple trip to retrieve a baseball quickly turns into an adventure filled with creaky stairs, spiders, dusty rooms, and a dark hallway that has the boys wondering what they have gotten themselves into.
 
I thought this was a cute little story that does a nice job of building a sense of suspense without becoming too scary for young readers. The old house, broken porch, holes in the roof, and long grass immediately give it that classic "scary old house" feeling. The creaking sounds and spiders add to the suspense, and I could easily imagine a young child enjoying the anticipation of finding out what is waiting at the end of the hallway.
 
Of course, the biggest scare turns out to be nothing more than a cat. I liked this ending because it gives the story a little bit of humor and shows that sometimes the things we imagine to be scary aren't actually scary at all. The boys are clearly frightened, but they stick together and keep going, which also gives the story a nice little message about friendship and being brave.
 
The writing is simple and easy to follow, making A Baseball Scare a good choice for young children who are beginning to read on their own. The short sentences and sound effects like "CRASH!", "CREAK!" and "MEOW!" help keep the story moving and make it more engaging for kids.
 
A Baseball Scare is a quick and entertaining read with just the right amount of spookiness for younger readers. It has friendship, adventure, a little suspense, and a funny ending. Kids who enjoy slightly spooky stories without anything truly frightening will probably have fun following Tom and his friend into the old house. And, like the boys, they may think twice before going anywhere near that house again!
